Photoshop 21.1 Light effects no longer working

System details below.

PS 2019 latest version works fine on the same machine.  At first, i did a fresh install of 2020 but after that version continued to be slow, crash and features just didn't work i installed 2019 and everything was fine (in regards to lighting effects).

Reproducing the problem:

1. Open an RGB 8bit image

2. Navigate to Effects | Render | Lighting Effects

3. Try any lighting effect; custom or preset

The end result is nothing.  you can move the sliders all day long and nothing happens.  Pick a color or light and move it around and nothing.  This all worked in 2019.  The only thing that works is the ambient light.  But not very well.

Things I've tried:

1. Reset my preferences

2. reset lighting effects

3. Installed latest GPU drivers (and even old ones that are known to be solid)

4. Used a Quadro and a GTX

5. I changed my performance settings from everything on to a bare minimum.

6. Uninstalled and used the Adobe cleaner tool to insure everything was bye-bye still no go

I've also noticed the 3D screen rendering is all over the place when I'm in 3D mode and the light rendering is off or seems to be wrong compared to 2019.  So something definitely up.  System specs below:

Hi

It sounds like you have the same issue I reported as a bug here  https://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/3d-gpu-preview-is-broken-in-v21

You may wish to add your own comments to that report

I was finding this infuriating as well!!

On another forum I found that going into Preferences\Technology Previews and tick "Deactivate Native Canvas" worked for me!!

@CraigSimpsonPhotography  that is a different issue to that posted in 2020.

Adobe are updating the core graphics functions in Photoshop. This is driven by the operating systems of Apple and Microsoft in which the old Open GL functions are being removed in the case of Apple, or deprecated in the case of Microsoft. This means that the graphics functions that have worked for years must be rewritten to use Metal and Direct X. At the same time, Adobe are sensibly updating those core functions to deliver the additional speed we require to handle the very large files of today. Some of these changes were made in 22.4.
However, some functionality in Photoshop, such as 3D and Lighting effects, still relies on the older Open GL graphics functions. To make these work, an additional preference Preferences>Technology previews>Deactivate Native Canvas has been added. This can be checked and Photoshop restarted to restore 3D functions to where they were in 22.3

Hi Dave,

Thank you for the great info. I am having the same frustrating problem. I attempted your native canvas idea and now it will not give me the option for Lighting effects at all. Any other ideas?
