P: Photoshop 22.5 - Add to Selection not working in Action

I have an action which starts by using the magic wand to create a selection. I've used it for a few years over multiple versions of Photoshop on Windows.

Its now just not working at all, either running the action or double-clicking that step. If I delete the step and manually record the Magic Wand clicking the canvas, the step is added to the action and the selection works as expected.

I have actions which use the magic wand tool to select a white background. That action step is now failing to select anything, whether I run the whole action or double-click that step. The wand does work fine, and if I remove that action step and re-record manually using the wand, the background is selected and the step is added.

To clarify, did you record an action with using the magic want on a white area but when trying on a different image, it did not select white pixels? If that's the case, the white area in the second image may not be in the same place as the first image so would not select the white area.

Did you try run that step on the same image as when you recorded the selection with the magic wand?

The action step doesn't work period. I've used these actions on thousands of files before now, they always worked fine. This is not operator error.

To reproduce:

1. create a new document with one layer, filled with white

2. create a new action

3. record a single step of clicking the magic wand on the canvas, the entire canvas will be selected

4. undo

5. run the action

6. observe that nothing is selected on the canvas

Adobe? Yes, no, is this reproducible? Two of my most used actions are affected by this and I haven't come up with a workaround.

I can confirm I'm getting the same result. I'm on Windows PS 22.5.0.

If I use a Rectangular Marquee or other shape selection, recording and playing works as expected. Magic Wand and Quick Selection don't work. Object Selection Tool does work.

Hi again.

I did more testing. The following did work when recorded in an action and when run on the same or another image.

1. Choose - Select > Color Range

2. Use the ink dropper icon to select white pixels (or any colour) in your canvas.

3. Press OK.

The above achived the same results as a magic wand.

I also tried the following successfully in an action:

1. Choose - Select > Subject

Adobe does not need to Confirm or Deny they need to fix the issue.  

Even when I make a selection stroking the quick selection tool around the canvas edge.  Clear recorded in the action does not deleted the selected pixels. However, adding a second clear step does. The First delete deletes the work Path the second the pixels. The Magic wand method is not the best method for me I normally needed to use the Magic wand in ADD mode and sample the four corners in case there may be gradient in the white background.  In 22.5 the Magic Wand Records OK but  it does not set a selection the action is played

Color Range doesn't do the same thing as the Wand. I'm making a contiguous selection.

Yes the issue is in Photoshop's 22.5 Action Play Support.  Action that have Magic Want Step do not select anything when  you use the action is played.   You can record the steps OK in 22.5 they just do not work when Played in 22.5.  Action recorded in 22.5  that have magic wand steps work  in prior version of Photoshop like version 2020 21.2.11. It is  a 22.5 issue.

I preferred stroking the Quick selection tool over the magic wand tool, However, these days I find Select Subject usually create a good selection. One that may be better then what the magic wand and quick selection tools select.

Here Stroking the Path with the quick Selection Tool made the better Selection.

Could you please post a screenshot at the time of the erros with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Options Bar, …) visible and the Action fully expanded in the Actions Panel?
