Photoshop 3D Graphics Bugs/Error 2021

Hello,

I got a new iMac (my first) recently. I've had it for about a month and recently I tried to use 3D in Photoshop. I have used 3D before on Windows without an issue.

My Mac specs are below:
iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020)
Processor: 3.3 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i5
Memory/RAM: 16 GB 2667 MHz DDR4

Graphics: AMD Radeon Pro 5300 4 GB

I first encountered an issue the other day where I could make any layer into a 3D object but all the panels, and previews of 3D without rendering would just dissapear and completely go. However the layer would still be there just not a visible 3D object. The only sort of fix to this was rendering the object or partially rendering but when you moved or did anything to the object it went again. I tried everything and found a forum online to check a box in the Photoshop preferences which was called: Deactivate Native Canvas, more info can be found on this forum.
https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop/3d-object-disappears-when-moving-camera-photoshop-22-4-0/m-...

Then this solved the issue (on the latest photoshop version 22.4.2)

When I then tried to use 3D I could see what I was doing this time but was instantely greeted with an error message saying:
The 3D features require that 'Use Graphics Processor' is enabled in the Performance preferences. Your video card must meet the minimum requirements and you may need to check that your driver is working correctly.

The only fix so far to solve this was to revert to version 22.3.0

And it fixes all of the above issues, however this now prevents me from updating if I want to use neweer features and 3D. I understand in recent updates CPU and GPU issues have arisen and I believe this would be best fixed when possible as quite a few people are having similar issues. I have also done a lot of research into this and would be glad to have a version of Photoshop where this is fixed. I understand these things take time and investigation, I am not a software coder or developer myself and understand that it takes time but would be much appreciated when fixed. I also don't have any screenshots or videos of any of the issues but I would be 100% be happy to help any further if needed.

Whenever this issue is resolved please let me know so that I will be glad to update to it then.

Thanks,
Stephen Underwood

Did you review Adobe list of know 3D issues in Photoshop 2021 and try any  Adobe suggested work around.  Adobe is still working on developing Photoshop 2021. https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/known-issues.html

A bit of background on the video card and a couple of things you can try :

1. Adobe are updating the core graphics functions in Photoshop. This is driven by the operating systems of Apple and Microsoft in which the old Open GL/CL functions are being removed in the case of Apple, or deprecated in the case of Microsoft. This means that the graphics functions that have worked for years must be rewritten to use Metal and Direct X. At the same time, Adobe are sensibly updating those core functions to deliver the additional speed we require to handle the very large files of today.
2. Led by the changes being made above, Adobe introduced new GPU checks in 23.3.1. Unfortunately, these caused issues and have therefore been revised for v22.4. That means that many GPUs that incorrectly did not work in 22.3.1 will now be seen in 22.4 and will function.
3. Some functionality in Photoshop, such as 3D, still relies on the older Open GL graphics functions. To make these work, an additional preference Preferences>Technology previews>Deactivate Native Canvas has been added. This can be checked and Photoshop restarted to restore 3D functions to where they were in 22.3
4. Unfortunately, the move to update the core graphics functions will mean that some older GPUs will no longer be suitable. If you are using 22.4 and your GPU is still not recognised, first make sure the driver is up to date. If it is and you only have a single GPU enabled ( conflicting GPUs remain an issue) then you could try and force Photoshop to use your older GPU by creating a file PSUserConfig.txt containing the lines:
# Force GPU On
GPUForce 1
Save that text file to :
Windows: [InstallationDrive]:\Users \ [UserName]\ AppData\ Roaming\ Adobe\ [Photoshop_version]\[Photoshop_version]Settings\
macOS: //Users/[UserName]/Library/Preferences/[Photoshop_version]Settings/
Note though that this requires 22.4 or 22.4.1 and is not officially supported by Adobe, so may cause other issues – so you do it at your own risk

Thanks for your message. I understand your message a bit but would you mind simplifying what you mean a little as I'm not as skilled with hardware and pc specs as much. It is also a shame as I have only had my brand new iMac for a few months and it won't let me install even two versions of photoshop to have the up to date features and fixes and then use an older one for 3D but I will try to look at some of your ideas if you wouldn't mind making some of it a little simpler or link to a forum, video or link to help me.

Hi Stephen short version :

To use 3D in Photoshop v22 then you must check Deactivate Native Canvas in Preferences Technology and then check OK and close and restart Photoshop. Without that, it will not preview correctly.

You have a modern GPU which should pass the tests that are carried out by Photoshop. However, if for some reason it does not pass and is being disabled try this: Use a text editor to create a file containing just two lines:

# Force GPU On
GPUForce 1

Save that file with the name PSUserConfig.txt in this location //Users/[YourUserName]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop 2021 Settings/

Even, if that temporarily allows you to use your GPU then you should also raise the issue at the link below which is monitored by Adobe development staff :    https://feedback.photoshop.com/ giving full details of your system and issue.
