Hello Community,

Photoshop (up to date)

defaults to the crop tool, so i am always having to escape out.  I tried to find the fix in preferences, but was not able to figure it out.  I would appreciate your help!

What have you done for all-purpose trouble-shooting so far?

Restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be a good starting point:

I was wondering the same thing. Granted, my default always is on the brush tool.  The only time I've ever seen it open on the crop tool is if that was the last tool I used.
