Updated to version and now playing a simple "save as" action totally crashed photoshop. I've tried this on multiple computers with the same result. Here's how:
Record a new action as the following:
1. Duplicate background layer
2. Save as PSD
3. close file.
Then when I try to play the action, it crashes. I've restarted my computer, uninstalled/reinstalled Photoshop, and have had the same result on different computers.
Help!

I cannot reproduce the issue.
What have you done for all-purpose trouble-shooting so far?
Restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be a good starting point:

I've restarted computer, relaunched photoshop, uninstalled photoshop, reinstalled photoshop. I also reproduced this on a remote work computer not even connected to my adobe account.
When you say "restoring preferences", do you mean resetting all the preferences to default, then putting my preferences back?

No, I mean resetting them to default and seeing if it makes a difference.

It's definitely something in my preferences but I can't figure out what. I deleted them and created the action from a fresh interface and it works fine. As soon as I copy my prefs back, the crash occurs again when running the action 😐

Sometimes it becomes necessary to trash the prefs … it is annyoing, no doubt, but as long as one is fairly meticulous about saving custom Presets (Actions, Brushes, Custom Shapes, …) those are all still available.
One could theoretically automate changing the settings in the Preferences themselves to the intended values but it might not be a bad »refresher« to just go through them manually.
One may notice and reset all the unwanted Tool and View settings only after a while but »s…t happens«.
