Whenever I open new photos or videos for editing, I find afterwards that they have been added to my catalogue. Is it possible to stop this happening? I sometimes just want to use PSE14 for editing only.

Look at the checkboxes on the bottom of the display you get when saving a file.
If you check the 'save in the organizer' box, YOU decide to include the file in the organizer. If YOU don't check, the file is not included. That's not automatic. That is YOUR choice, and it is 'sticking' for the next save. You can change it for any new save.

The only other way to 'import' a media file in a catalog is the 'watched folders' feature in the organizer.
Could you give more info about your workflow so that other users can replicate your issue?

Michel - I have no watched folders at all.
It's very difficult to explain the workflow as I'm not sure at what point the files go into the catalogue. With video for example, I import the clips from the cam or SD card into the project. I perform all the normal editing routines and save the project. It is then rendered and saved as mp4 to HDD. If I then look at the catalogue, some but not all of the clips are appearing in the catalogue. Simple to remove them but very annoying all the same, especially as I do not keep any video in the catalogue, just photos.
I also find many audio files imported for the video edits in the catalogue.
Same happens with photos I have edited. Once again some but not all of the photos have been added to the catalogue before I "Get photos". Again I can delete them from the catalogue no problem.
I have considered reinstalling APE but worried about affecting the tagging of thousands of photos.

OK...
It's about Premiere Elements, which shares the organizer with Photosop Elements.
To be clear, this forum is for Photoshop Elements and there is another for Premiere Elements:
I don't have Premiere Elements, so my best advice is to also post the same query to the experts in that forum.
What I do understand is that working in Premiere Elements (PE) is really different than working in Photoshop Elements (PSE). In both cases you have to organize and manage "assets", photo, video and audio files. Many PSE users don't use the organizer. They are happy to work with their OS (explorer/finder) or Lightroom or any other asset management software. They can simply open a photo in the editor without wanting to 'catalog' it. I can't imagine video editing without working with 'projects' which group and organize all the necessary videos, photos, audio files and store the parameters used to edit those components into an output video file.
In PSE, you can have various projects like slideshows, books etc. Then you also manage projects.
And those projects... are managed and stored in the organizer, in the catalog. So I can't imagine ignoring items in the catalog while creating and saving projects. The catalog has to include links to all your assets in your projects. The strategy to backup your creations necessarily must deal with everything in your projects. I'll leave the experts in the Premiere Elements forum comment on video creations backups.
You are mentioning photos: there, my previous answer did not include the fact that photos in any project have to be imported some way in the catalogs. Otherwise, try to open a totally new photo without checking the checkbox and see if that is 'sticky'.

Thanks Michel. I posted here because the problem is clearly linked across the 2 programs. Premiere certainly needs the assets within a project but I don't understand how some of those assets (not the project) find their way into the catalog.
I shall continue to play around with it to try and pin down at what point the photos are going to the catalog. If I still can't find the problem, I will try the Premiere guys. Thanks for your help.
