Hi,

I'm running Windows 10 and PSE 2018

I take images on my Canon 250D in both JPG and RAW format.

I have uploaded the images to an external disk drive.

I can view the images in Explorer in both JPG and RAW (CR3) format but I cannot open the RAW images in PSE Editor or Organizer.

I can open the RAW images in the basic Microsoft Photo Editor.

Do I need to upgrade my PSE to a more recent version?

Thanks

John

From past testing like in this thread, it seems Photoshop Elements 2018 is limited to camera raw 10.5

Hi Jeff,

So I have found.

I have tried all ways to import the files in RAW and CR3 but nothing works.

I have a trial version of the 2024 version which works fine so I'm going to have upgrade to that.

You camera requires ACR 11.3.   Follow these instructions and you should be good to go.    Not sure what the max version of ACR PSE 18 can handle, if the latest version of ACR does not work, just download any version equal to or above 11.3.

The following is a workaround to update Camera Raw within Elements. It is recommended to wait for Camera Raw updates within the product for issue fixes.

If you haven't been able to update the Camera Raw plug-in for Elements, follow these steps:

  • Quit all Adobe applications.
  • On Windows double-click the downloaded .zip file to unzip it. (Windows might unzip the file for you.)
  • On Windows, double-click the resulting .exe file to start the installer.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.

Once installed successfully, close the installer window.

  • Navigate to the following folder:
    •
    • On Windows: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CC\File Formats
  • Copy the Camera Raw plug-in from the CC > File Formats folder that is mentioned in the above step.
  • Navigate to the following folder:
    •
    • On Windows: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\Elements<Version Number>\File Formats
  • Replace the existing Camera Raw plugin in Elements<Version Number> folder with the plug-in that you copied

Hi Glen,

Thanks for the suggestion and link.

I have downloaded and tried both the 16.2 and 14.5 versions and neither will allow the importing of the CR3 images.

I have downloaded a trial version of PSE 2024 and that does allow me to import the images, so looks like I'll be upgrading to the newer version.

Hi jova54

I have a Canon EOS 90d that produces CR3 files and I have PSE 2023 on my Macbook.

When I double click the CR3 file it opens the FRONT PAGE of PSE 2023 allowing you to choose the Organizer or the Photo Editor, if you choose the Editor  it fails to ' Update your raw.....etc'.

I  found a workaround for this scenario.

The idea is to get double clicking the CR3 file  to go straight to the Editor.

I found the 'Adobe Photoshop Elements 2023' app in finder Applications.

I right clicked it and then clicked 'Show package contents'

I opened the Contents folder.

I opened MacOS folder.

I selected  'Adobe Photoshop Elements 2023 Editor' app.

I then dragged/copied it to the Macintosh HD  > Applications folder in Finder

Now in the Finder Applications folder there is

Adobe Photoshop Elements 2023.app.  ->  This opens to the PSE front page

Adobe Photoshop Elements 2023 Editor.app  -> this opens the Editor directly.

I restarted the Mac. ( I don't know if this is needed)

I went to 'Get Info' for a CR3 file and changed 'Open With' to  'Adobe Photoshop Elements 2023 Editor.app'

I Clicked 'Change All'

I double clicked the CR3 file and, after verifying the app, it opened in the editor.

I guess you could open the Organizer separately  by drag/copy the 'Adobe Elements 2023 Organizer.app' from the MacOS folder to the application folder as well.

Good luck.
