If you can see those files on your computer, they are not gone.
What happens is that you don't access your catalog as before. The catalog also holds your 'albums', which are simple 'playlists' of files on your computer.
It's not possible that your catalog contents have been deleted randomly, so the most likely reasons are that either your catalog folder has been deleted entirely (I don't think so) or that you are looking at another empty catalog.
To find catalog folders, do a search from your explorer or finder for a file named catalog.pse10db. You may find several files. Those files are the database files in their catalog folders. I would not be surprised if you found two of these .pse10db files, the smallest would be the current (empty) catalog, the biggest would be the previous (correct) one.
If you find such a bigger file, double click on it and that should open the organizer with the correct catalog.
