In my copy of organiser a large number of the thumbnails are indicated as an egg timer. The actual image is displayed when the thumbnail is clicked. How do I remove the egg timer but retain the image?

The general solution is: be patient!
Generating thumbnails needs opening every single file (converting it if it's a raw file) and saving a reduced size version. Depending on the number of items, that backgound task may require several hours. Browsing is still possible since the current page you have selected is handled in priority when building the cache. That's especially long for raw files, since the created thumbnail is not the small jpeg preview embedded in the raw file, it's a real conversion including all adjustement to reflect the edited look.
You can:
- let the building of the thumbnails run in night task
- use the catalog manager to 'optimize' the catalog
or have a look here:

Thank you for the help. It put me onto the way to resolve the problem.
I clicked on file, then manage catalogs, then clicked the catalog shown, then optimize.
