Fitting Image Within Constraintsdepe

A friend of mine has Elements 12 & under File>Automation Tools there is a command Fit Image which allows you to set the maximum height & width to resize the image to. There is also an option to prevent smaller images to be enlarged. For our club competitions our images need to be sized to fit 1400 x 1050 depending on the orientation. Was this command part of Elements 12 or is there a 3rd party plugin that will achieve this. Thanks for any help. Geoff

Yes, I have the same option in PSE12 and I think it's not a third party script.

I can't check other versions now, but you can get the same feature (possibly with batch) with a script from Elements+

Actually that's an adobe script that ships with later version of photoshop elements, i believe 11 thru 13, while 14 and 15 don't have the script.

It's main use is when recording actions for Batch resizing, but since pse can't officially record actions the script is probably there to use with prerecorded actions that use Fit Image as one of the steps in the action.

For resizing images in photoshop elements use Image>Resize>Image Size.

It could be simpler to use the 'Export as new files' command of the organizer. That lets you export big batches of files with the right pixels dimension. The only thing is you may have to export landscape and portrait orientation files separately.

The search 'by details' lets you select the orientation: you assign a temporary keyword to your selection and search for that keyword and the desired orientation.

Thanks to you both for your replies. The Fit Image command in 12 works regardless of the aspect ratio of the image so you don't have to think about whether it's portrait, landscape or square which is just what our members need. Unfortunately I can't see any sign of it in any of the menus in 14. Do either of you know where it might be?

For a single image, the 'Fit image' command is handy. For a batch of files, it's much faster to use the 'export' feature, even with splitting into two batches, portrait and landscape. Anyway, you'll have to resize a copy of your original, which is exactly what the export does in a single step (the custom pixel dimension is 'sticky' in the export dialog)..

This is disabled in PSE15 and I suspect also in PSE14 and 13.  Photoshop (the main program) has still got it.

The advantage of Fit Image is that it maintains the aspect ratio without distorting the image.  This is one more reason to keep old versions on the system just in case you need to features disabled in latest versions.

Yesterday Photoshop 2017 was released and I made sure I kept the 2015.5 on my machine when installing 2017.  Now I have CS6, 2015.x and 2017.

You'll have to experiment with this and see if it works, but i believe if you use File>Export as New Files in the Organizer, you can do the same as Fit Image by entering the same numbers in each field such as 1400 x 1400 as shown in the screenshot below in the Custom Size box and that way both landscape and portrait images can be resized in one go.

... not quite.

In that case, views in portrait orientation will have 1400 pixels height instead of 1050.

That said, it's very frequent that the requirement be to stay to a given pixel dimension in the biggest dimension. Useful tip anyway.

Thanks for all the replies. Unfortunately the Export solution doesn't really do the same thing. Our members' images sometimes have some odd aspect ratios & the Fit Image command sorted all this out with minimum thought. I wonder why Adobe took it out of 13 & 14. Geoff

Wrong, exporting does the same thing. No change of aspect ratio.

Probably because it was redundant and less useful in practice.

After all, you have two steps to do if you want to keep your original as well as the resized version: copying and resizing; exporting does that in one step; furthermore it works with batches, most  common situation for resizing.

Another possible reason: interface coherence: Elements does not use 'Automation tools' for its own needs, only for compatibility with third-party add-ons. How many users had the slightest idea of where the feature was hidden?

I also wonder about the choice of dimensions for your club competition. Is there a reason to favour landscape over portrait orientation? The general practice is fair, it only assigns a limit for the bigger dimension.

Thanks Michel, I guess I'll have to give up on finding an easy way to do this.

The reason for the 1400 x 1050 is the resolution of the club projector & requirements of the Southern Counties Photographic Federation. It doesn't mean everything has to be landscape, just that the maximum width is 1400 pixels & maximum height is 1050 pixels otherwise the projector rezsizes to fit which introduces artefacts into the image. What operating system are you using?

It would be easy to put the Fit Image script into pse 14.

It's located in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 12\Presets

in my Vista computer, if that may help.

I have got this sorted now. I got a friend with the full version of Photoshop to record an action calling the Fit Image.jsx script then copied both the script & action into the scripts folder in Elements 14. Finally I loaded the action into Elements & now have the command under Automation Tools. Thanks for all your help & suggestions.
