Geo function not working in PSE 2018

I bought PSE2018 in march 2018. Now, after less than a year, the geolocation function, a KEY FUNCTION of PSE, isn't working anymore. Searching in this forum learns me that Adobe is aware of this and is doing nothing to repair. The reason is that this is a third party (Google) service which can be stopped at any time.

This is an unacceptable way of treating your customers! I now find out Adobe had the same problem with older versions of PSE and that they knew this was coming. And still they advertised PSE 2018 with a working geolocation function. Consumers have rights, you know. And I don't mean the right to buy an upgrade at a price higher than the original price I payed for PSE2018.

I understand that you can't fix this problem within your "update policy". Fair enough, but you should offer a free upgrade to your customers. Keep in mind that we are PAYING customers.

Sometimes partner services finish due to circumstances outside the control of Adobe. A new map service has been established in PSE 2019. This is obviously disappointing to users of earlier versions but Adobe is only able to provide updates for the current version which has always been the policy.

In fact it would be untenable for Adobe to make changes to every previous version but I think the idea of a special upgrade offer has merit, notably for those who have purchased less than a year ago. But this is a user to user forum so I can only sympathise.

I don't expect Adobe to add new functions to the software. I just want them to keep the existing functions working. The geolocation is a key function : it sits in the main menu, next to persons, which also is a key function. Adobe advertised with it, not telling it would probably disappear in a short time. They should keep it working for a couple of years at least. If I was planning to buy each new version, I would have taken a subscription. I already payed enough for a program just to organise my family photos. I expect Adobe to solve this for me and all the others in my situation.

You don't understand.

Or you don't want to understand.

This is my view as just another user like you. I don't work for Adobe and I am totally free to give my own opinion.

Adobe does owe you nothing here.

I don't expect Adobe to add new functions to the software.

You are using a feature provided by Adobe, it's the ability to connect to Google Maps which is a free service (for you) that Google is free to stop when they want. The other feature offered by Adobe is to integrate that free Google service into its catalog management.

Google has decided to stop access to their maps service and not only for Adobe, also for a number of other software editors. Adobe did not remove anything nor changed a single line of code.

Also remember that Adobe had to recode the map service with new APIs from Google for PSE2018. Maybe not a new 'feature', but a function they had to code, which is an additional programming burden. You don't know either what that meant in $$$$ for Adobe. So, Adobe has chosen to change its map provider for a more futureproof one.

So yes, for me it's clear you want a new function for free.

Adobe advertised with it, not telling it would probably disappear in a short time.

Remember that when you checked the software requirements, it was clearly stated that external services might be absent or removed without notice (on the same page). Adobe did not remove anything nor changed a single line of code. Adobe did provide a way to reinstate the maps after a few months for PSE14 and 15, to integrate the new Google API in PSE2018 and to replace Google by another map provider in PSE2019 and its other softwares.

They should keep it working for a couple of years at least. If I was planning to buy each new version, I would have taken a subscription. I already payed enough for a program just to organise my family photos.

You perfectly know that new features are only offered in the current Elements version and that Elements has no subscription. The issue is that for people relying on the map service, Google has made it necessary for Elements users to upgrade two consecutive years, which is very hard for those users.

I expect Adobe to solve this for me and all the others in my situation.

I totally agree, but I think that your arguments are not the best way to get a positive result. A more positive approach has already been suggested: to offer a very special upgrade price for PSE2019 for PSE2018 owners.

I would also like to show my difference about:

The geolocation is a key function : it sits in the main menu, next to persons, which also is a key function.

For me, as an amateur photographer, the map service and face recognition are only gadgets.

People and Places are key functions. They have been available from the beginning in the organizer. I understand that with today's trend to only use phones for social media sharing, those two features are very important for other users.

May I suggest to post in the feedback forum to add your vote to similar complaints?

Thanks Prakash, that sounds like a solution is available that does not imply upgrading to PSE 19 at the regular upgrade pricing?

If so, is there any reason why that solution cannot be shared in this forum or in the knowledge base (and save support the time and trouble of having to respond to individual requests)?

Hello,

As mentioned by @MichelBParis, Google has decided to stop access to their maps service and not only for Adobe, also for a number of other software editors. Adobe did not remove anything nor changed a single line of code.

There is no way, Geo location starts working in 2018 or below versions unless Google starts providing their map services again.

Thanks

Prakash

Hi Prakash,

I have sufficient experience in software development to understand that things stop working when an API or service is changed or removed unilaterally without any concern for backward compatibility. These things are bilateral though, so if the provider (Google) changes their end of the equation, the client (Adobe) totally has the option to adapt accordingly.

I have some trouble though when on the one hand you first say "You may contact support team, they would be able to help you regarding this"  and then "There is no way, Geo location starts working in 2018 or below versions unless Google starts providing their map services again." If indeed "there is no way", then how may support be able to help?

If the cost of issuing a patch for PSE2018 is so prohibitive, then at least a very favourable upgrade price would only seem fair for customers who have paid good money for an Adobe product - not a Google product! - less than one year ago, and this could very well be communicated via this forum instead of having to contact support.

If there is some imperative reason why the only way to resolve this is to contact support (do they need some sort of private information?), then perhaps that reason could be communicated here also.

Thanks,

Raf
