I have realised that I have GPS data in Strava for a lot of images that I have taken while walking and cycling over the years. I don't think that PSE 2020 will do this directly, but I can use a variety of tools to update the images to add GPS metadata
What I can't do is get PSE to use that data to pin images that have already been imported.
Is there an easy way to make PSE read the GPS metadata and pin the images according to that data?
I think that PSE reads the GPS data when it imports the files and woud pin it then, but I don't want to delete and reimport as it would lose the edits and tagging.
I read somewhere that updating the thumbnail might do it, but that doesn't seem to work.
Any ideas?

I don't think it is possible to do what you are asking.
It may be possible to import the phone photos to a new storage location, change the names of the files, perhaps by adding a prefix or suffix of geo and then importing the files again into your catalog. You could then stack the existing and geo photos and be able to search them while maintaining the existing edits. Just a thought.

Right clicking the image and choosing "update thumbnail" seems to get part of the way.
The images are pinned, to the extent that they appear on the map. Curiously, they do not seem to be taken off the unpinned list, so they are both pinned and unpinned at the same time.
The duck in flight in the screenshot below is an example of an image that is listed as unpinned but also appears on the map.

I've just been playing around a little with the Elements Places feature and it looks like writing the new metadata to the file will pin the files with GPS data to the map. See my post here.
