Hit Export from Camera card to PS Elements 2015 Organizer, but all photos are gone

I can see them in my organizer but do nothing with them, it says they are missing and will not reconnect.  I had 1845 images on my card and they are no longer there, where are they????????????????????

Please help, there are important photos and I need them.  WHY does this program do this?

What are YOU doing?

You don't 'export' from camera to your computer, you are using the downloader module of the organizer to:

1 - IMPORT, which means downloading your photo files to your computer (copying them - there is an option to delete from your card after the download is complete)

2 - that import feature reads your photo files and catalogs them, which means reading the exif data and writing them in a catalog as well as the locaton of each file on your computer. The catalog only contains links, no photo files.
