How do I open an .ai file in Photoshop Elements 18?

I've tried the 'right click then open with Photoshop' option, I've tried just dragging it to the photoshop screen, I've tried opening in Photoshop, but all that happens is that Photoshop tells me that it isn't 'the right sort of document'. Is it not possible to open an .ai file in Photoshop? If so, can I convert it to a jpeg file? It's a background, so I need the whole picture.

From the Adobe Illustrator application you can export and save content as jpeg. The file will also open in Photoshop CC 2018 where it can be rasterized and saved as jpeg. But that is not possible in PSE which has no EPS support. You may be able to search on-line for free tools to convert vector to jpeg.

What operating system are you using?

Ideally, you would won't to convert or save the AI file to a PDF to maintain the vector properties.

If you don't have Adobe Illustrator, a free program called Inkscape might be able to convert the ai file to pdf.
