How to open a NEF file?

Message : (Adobe photo elements 10):

"NEF file cannot be opened because of an incorrect file type"  ( ???????.)

Previously it worked with the Nikon 1J1. Since I have a Nikon V3 camera there are problems while in both cases RAW photos were made. How to fix this?

If you don't want to pay the upgrade for the current Elements 15 version, you can use the free Adobe DNGconverter.

It's an independant program (not a plugin) which can convert a whole folder of your NEF files to the DNG raw format that your current Elements version can read and edit.
