I've updated from Elements 8 HELP!!

Some stuff I used to know how to do, but things have changed.  I want to cut out the three black bars, then overlay the white marble onto another texture, then combine the two.  When I merge visible, then try to select the black bars with the magic wand, it says I can't because there's no layer selected, but the layer shows selected.

You have the bottom most layer selected, not any of the layers with a bar on each layer.

This is what I think your are trying to do, correct?
