Here is a 100% AI response, which seems pretty solid.

Duplicate photos appearing after importing into Adobe Organizer can be caused by various factors, including incorrect folder selection during import, duplicate files on the camera, or the Organizer's own behavior when handling file renaming. The solution involves verifying your import settings, checking for duplicates on your source device, and potentially adjusting import options to avoid duplication.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

1. Incorrect Import Settings:
  • Duplicate DCIM Folders:
If you have multiple "DCIM" (Digital Camera Images) folders selected for import, Organizer might import the same images from each folder, resulting in duplicates.

  • Check for Duplicate Catalogs:
In some cases, duplicate catalogs can be created, leading to the import of duplicate files. This can happen if you clone drives or have multiple catalog instances.

2. Duplicates on the Source Device (Camera):
  • Check for Duplicates:
Ensure your camera or storage device (SD card, etc.) doesn't have duplicate files. This can happen if you've accidentally saved the same photo multiple times.
  • Use an External Card Reader:
If possible, try importing from a different device (e.g., using an external card reader) to rule out problems with your camera or device.

3. Organizer's Behavior:
  • File Renaming:
Organizer might rename files during import or when they're moved within the program, sometimes adding a "-1" suffix to create duplicate entries. This can happen if you have files with the same name in different locations.

  • Missing Photos:
You might encounter duplicate files where the originals have been lost, especially after moving photos around within Organizer.

  • Duplicate Detection:
Organizer has a duplicate finder, but it might not always recognize true duplicates, especially if they have different metadata or names.

4. Solutions:
  • Review Import Settings:
Carefully examine your import settings to ensure you're only importing the necessary folders and that you haven't selected multiple copies of the same files.

  • Clean Up Duplicates on Source Device:
Delete any duplicate files on your camera or SD card before importing them into Organizer.

  • Adjust Import Options:
If you're encountering duplicate files, consider adjusting your import settings to avoid duplication. You can try importing into a different catalog, or using the "Don't Import Suspected Duplicates" option.

  • Check for -1 Suffixes:
Search for files with the "-1" suffix within Organizer and delete them.

  • Use a Duplicate Finder Tool:
There are third-party duplicate finder tools available that might be more effective than the built-in tool in Organizer.

No AI has been used in the creation of the following reply:

The duplicate DCIM folder suggested by Glenn is a possibility.  But I don't think I have previously heard of that happening with a Canon camera before.  If the AI response does not solve the mystery, please answer the following questions:

What version of Elements are you using?

How are you importing the files into the Organizer?

How are the duplicate files being named?

Are the duplicates all contained within the same drive and folder?

If you are using the Adobe Photo Downloader via Import>From Camera or Card Reader, show us a screenshot of the APD dialog.

Are you sure you are not shooting raw+jpeg?

Are the duplicates being created during the same import session or are you importing from the same memory card at different times without deleting files from the card?

Do you filter the APD dialog to avoid duplicates from being imported?
