Incomplete backup, files not appearing in catalog, what should I do?

I am using Photoshop Elements 15(recently upgraded to 15 from 13), I was using an older version on another computer), on a PC with latest version of Windows 10.

I recently created a new catalog where about half the photos were obtained via a card reader and the other half were imported as files from an external drive using Elements import function. The imports via the card reader were done under Elements 15, while the others were initially done via my older version of Elements 13. The catalog and files, which are currently located on the C drive, are working properly, except when I try to do backups. When I run the backup catalog function to an external drive, Elements indicates that the backup is OK. In addition, both the .tly and .buc files are there.  When I try to restore the catalog to an external drive (working on a portable PC) using the restore function, all the files do download to the location (did check and see the files). However, in Organiser all the files obtained via the card reader appear as blank with a question marks, while the photos that were imported from Elements13 files do appear in the catalog workplace.  I also tried to reconnect the files and to unhide files without success.  What should I do to solve this problem?
