Moving albums from Elements 10

New Here ,
Apr 29, 2018 Apr 29, 2018

I have a lot of photos with captions organized in albums on my current laptop running Elements 10. I want to copy thenm all to a new laptop with Elements 18. If I just copy the photos I loose all the organized albums. Is there a way to copy all the photos with captions and people recognition organized in the relevant local albums?

Thanks

In Elements, "albums" are lists of files saved only in your catalogs.

They are similar to 'playlists' for audio files.

When you upgrade to a new version of Elements, you simply 'update / convert' your catalog to the new version and everything managed in your catalog, including albums, keyword hierarchy, notes, ratings, stacks, version sets etc is kept.

During the installation process of Elements, you are prompted to 'convert' the current catalog. You can start the conversion manually from the menu File > Manage catalogs for any catalog, even for already converted old ones. The process creates a catalog copy in the current format, without deleting the old catalogs.

If you migrate to a new version of Elements into a new computer, you have to migrate not only the catalog, but also all the photo files.
The process requires a backup and restore:

Move Elements Organizer catalog

Since albums are only lists pointing to the photo files identifiers in the catalog, they can't be saved as metadata in the photo files like keywords. To keep your keywords available for newer Elements versions or other editing softwares, use the command File > Write metadata to files.

If I cannot move my albums this means that every time I change computer (say every three years) I will have start from scratch. Is this the case also for the latest version 18 and if so how do other people cope? It took me ages to organise all my photos in albums.

Could you please let me know if I am correct?

My previous post explains that you only have to convert your catalogs.

Why make it complicated? It's true for all Elements versions.

Done and worked. Thanks a lot for your help. I did not understand in your original reply that the catalog was including the albums organization as well.
