Dont really want to go down dog route as it is a extra step and does it lose any image data?

If you want a free solution, the DNG conversion is there for you. An extra step (a single step for a whole folder, even hundreds of images).
And no, you don't lose any image data. Same quality (it's a raw format).

The faq about the latest Elements version has not yet been updated:
FAQ: Will Photoshop Elements work with my camera, or Why won't my raw files open?
You'll see that your camera requires the ACR version 9.9.
Cameras supported by Camera Raw
Which is only supported by PSE15 and the current PSE2018.
Camera Raw plug-in and Adobe application compatibility
Only PSE 2018 is sold by Adobe now, so if you pay the 'upgrade' price, you'll be able to open your ORF files natively. Maybe wait for the next PSE 2019 version (September/October) and see if the other enhancements and bug fixes are worth the expense.
