Organiser Thumbnails not loading (PSE 14)

Hi there,

I have a an iMac (Late 2009) running Sierra 10.12.3. Using PSE 14 with Organiser. I keep my catalogue on an external drive (Western Digital) which has been working fine .

My last few imports of photo's from same camera's cards etc I have been using for some time, will not display the thumbnails in the grid view - just have the hourglass icon.

When I click on them for large view they load and I can open and edit. Occasionally an edited version will open a thumbnail but not always. Started happening at the end of January. Thumbnails before the 27th January continue to load just fine.

I have tried:-

Repair - no errors

Optimize - no change in the display.

I also cleared the Media cache - no change.

I have over 45,000 items in my catalogue - is there some sort of limit? I prefer one large catalogue but would it be better if I split them?

Many thanks

The media cache? The file you have to DELETE is the 'thumbs.5.cache' in your catalog folder.

- find the location of that folder from the menu Help >> System Information.

(Note to Windows users: Be sure to allow the Windows explorer to show 'hidden files and folders'.)

- delete it and restart the organizer, let it run to rebuild the cache database; that may take a few hours.

As far as I know, there is not limit and splitting a catalog would not make the organizer faster. There may be some kind of limit if you use face recognition (I don't).

Thanks for taking the time to answer Michel. Unfortunately, I cannot find this 'thumbs.5.cache'. I followed your instruction and checked the location of this file but when I follow the pathway its not there - when I get to the Elements Organiser folder, no folder named /Catalogs /Ext_Catalog/. I have had some Time Machine issues as well so my backups do not pre-date when this issue occurred so couldn't check if the folder was there prior to the date it started. Very tedious. Is there some way to recreate these or do I need to do new install ?

ADDIT - I tried recreating the folders listed in the path, restarting computer then restarting Organizer - no change

ADDIT NO 2 - I reinstalled the application over the top - still no change. My Preference is not to uninstall and do a clean install then re-import the whole catalog but I'm thinking that might be what's needed

Addit No 3 - I also imported new images to see if the problem would resolve with new images rather than those already missing a thumbnail. Odd thing is, images prior to a certain date, are displaying in the Grid view just fine and there are two edited pics that are displaying sometimes. Very perplexing.

ADDIT No 4 - In the end, I created a new Catalog and imported the files which would not display in the original catalog, and they all display perfectly. So I went back into old catalog, deleted one of the folders then reimported - still no good.

So I'm settling for a split catalog at this point. Can't help thinking that size of Catalog does matter.

Also saw another thread about image size but this did not seem to be part of my issue.

Did you try what arshla jindal suggest in post Nr 3?

(I don't know anything about Macs).

So I went back into old catalog, deleted one of the folders then reimported

I think you really need to delete the thumbnail cache before you let it recreate the thumbnails or before you import again.

If that was the advice regarding the path ~/Library - yes I did - still no sign of the thumbnail cache.
