Photoshop elements charcoal filter

Please help, I'm not sure what I did but for some reason when I go to apply my charcoal filter it is solid black with white sketching instead of the white background and light blacks and grey for sketch.  I was trying different ways to get a sketch effect not using the filter and some how must have mistakenly changed the setting.  Any help would be so very much appreciated.

Before using the effect, be sure to have the default foreground/background icon on the bottom of your tool pallet on the left set to the default black on white (shortcut D).
