Photoshop Elements failure. [Unable to install old version of Elements: error need MS Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher]

Many, many, many years ago (around the turn of the century) I bought a colour printer. It came with Adobe Photoshop Elements which has proved to be sufficient for my needs.

The printer has long since given up the ghost but the software has served me well until recently. When I try to reinstall the software I get the message You need to have Internet Explorer 4.0 or greater to install Photoshop Elements.    Stup will now quit.’

As I have Internet Explorer 11 I cannot understand the problem.

Can you help?

The problem is your ancient Elements installer is coded to look for Internet Explorer 9 or earlier.

Old code in your Elements installer means the Elements installer thinks IE 10 and 11 are earlier versions than IE4. Or it simply cannot find any version of IE where it expects to.

If you're confident editing the Windows Registry, try the steps here

Photoshop Elements 1.01
