New to photoshop elements. I have many thousands of pictures on my hard drive. Is there a number above which organizer has difficulty handling. seems like it would take hours to serrch and categorize more then a few dozen pics.

I don't know how many photos organizer can handle. What I do know is be careful.
Don't do anything until you back up your photos to an external drive. I can't emphasize this enough. Two backups would be even better.
I've been using PSE 2018 for several weeks. PSE is fine but the Organizer has been very problematic....even after a clean install (reset) of my OS (W10) and reinstalled PSE on the clean system. I don't know if others experience these problems, or if the software I've downloaded from Adobe is corrupted.
I still haven't gotten some answers about recurring problems but I learned:
Import your photos directly into Organizer via Organizer.
I've personally shut off all auto stuff in the preferences such as Watched Folders and Meta-Analysis.
Only move photos, create new folders, etc, in the Organizer, not in your Pictures folders.
It may be helpful to skim posts I've made outlining the problems. Most appear related to moving around images in organizer, something that I've been advised in this forum to do.:
