When I import a photo into photoshop elements and look at the before/after, the image has changed slightly even before I do any editing. Skin tones appear slightly more red than in the before (original). Does anyone know why this is happening?

Are you in quick mode or Exert Mode? If you are in Quick mode then something must have been selected in Adjustments tab. I suggest click on the Expert tab and then see if it is still the same picture or is it a changed one.
