Photoshop Elements wont load CR3's

I have just bought an R5 Mkii which has raw files CR3 from a 5d Mkiv that has raw files of CR2, when I try and open the CR3 images in Photoshop Elements 2024 I keep getting a message to install the camera raw plugin which I've done but the files still wont load. I've downloaded the latest version of camera Raw and also reinstalled PE 2024 but I keep getting the same message. Also the Camera Raw version in PE doesn't change to the new version. Am I missing something?

What operating system are you using?

I believe the version of Camera Raw that installs for PSE 2024 when using Help>Install Camera Raw is 16.0, however,

your Canon EOS R5 Mark II requires camera raw 16.4 or newer.

You can update the Camera Raw plugin for PSE 2024 by following the directions in this thread:

Hey Jeff. Windows 11 and I tried to download Camera Raw version 17.2 which is the latest. Photoshop Elements 2024 has ver 16.0.0

The link sends me back to version 17.2 for downloading.

@Tont58, you must follow the workaround instructions found in the post that has been linked by Jeff.  Downloading and installing ACR 17.2 is not sufficient.  You must copy the Camera Raw.8bi (17.2) file from:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CC\File Formats

to: 

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\Elements 24\File Formats\

This is for Windows.  If you have a Mac, the path is shown in the linked post.

Hey Greg, thanks for this. When I try and copy the 8bi file I get a message that "the action cant be completed because the folder or file in it is open in another program". Also the file in CC\file formats is older (modified 31/01/2025) than the one in E24 \file formats, which has a modified date of 26/03/2025 I have no other programs open that I can tell and tried re-booting but same message appears.

You still haven't told us which OS you are using.  If you are on Windows, open Task Manager and end the Elements Auto Creations 2024.exe process if it is running.

Hey Greg, I mentioned at the start I was on Windows 11. Meantime I've followed your latest instruction then copied the .8bi files and all is good. I can now open CR3's in PE 2024. Thanks you so much.
