My Canon EOS Rebel XTI camera is not recognized as a device when I try to upload images to the organizer. What's strange is I uploaded several pictures just a week or two ago.

If the camera is not recognized by your computer, the Organizer won't be able to see it.  Try a different USB cable and/or a different USB port.

What OS and version of Elements are you using?

Make sure that the device is switched on and recognized by your computer before opening the Organizer and the Photo Downloader.

I'm not familiar with the Canon menu system but it may require you to be in a certain mode in order to transfer files.

Thanks Greg

*What OS and version of Elements are you using? *

Windows 10, Elements 2022

*Make sure that the device is switched on and recognized by your computer
before opening the Organizer and the Photo Downloader.*

The problem is the device, the camera, is not recognized by the computer
when switched on and connected. Organizer opened or not.

*I'm not familiar with the Canon menu system but it may require you to be
in a certain mode in order to transfer files.*

Yes it does, the menu system has a "Transferring Images to a Personal
Computer" However in the process the instructions say to click on
symbolssome of which don't exist!

So I'm guessing it's a camera problem that a professional would have to
fix. What's most aggravating is I never followed the manual anyway. I
simply connected a USB cable to my PC and the device, the camera, was
recognized and for years I have been able to upload photos. The last time
was about a month ago?

But thank you anyway Greg, I appreciate your trying to help

computers like to turn of power to usb ports "to save power"-- thinking they are laptops and need to conserve battery power-- it happens, sometimes after windows updates I have to go back and make sure the usb root hub settings in my device manager have not changed.

You may also have to tell your computer "Hey!  Im using this usb cable to transfer data and not just charging things". --- generally there is a pop up window that appears that will give you the option of says "nope, just charging" or "Yepo, transfering data".  Some usb cables are charge only and lack the data pins needed.

I got tired of messing with the settings so I just take out the sim chip out of the camera and stick it in a chip reader- never any issues.
