Problem editing images with Elements 14 that came from Lightroom 6

When in the Develop module in LR, I am able to bring images into Elements 14 to make edits. However, once the image is brought into Elements, I cannot create a new layer, make a background copy, create a new adjustment layer or use most of the tools in the tool bar unless I change the following setting first:  Go to Image, click on Mode, change to 8-bits/channel, select RGB color. Once this change is made, I then can create layers, etc.  and use ALL the tools in the tool bar. I checked my settings in the Preference tab in Lightroom before sending images to Elements and LR shows Adobe Photoshop Elements 14 as my external editor. Should I also have Elements selected as the "Additional editor" in LR before bringing images into Elements to make edits? Should I change the color space to sRGB and 8-bits/channel in the preferences in LR. Please help. This is very frustrating if I have to change all these settings every time I bring in an image to Elements to make further edits. Thanks, Mary Ann
