Problem with big catalog file in PSE 3.0

Dear all,

my aunt is using photoshop elements 3.0 since several years because she does not feel comfortable to "learn" a newer version. Yet, this was never a problem and I even managed to run this old software on her win7 (64bit) notebook. However, recently the size of the catalog file became over 1 Gb and since than the system was hardly usable any longer (5 to 10 minutes waiting time after each start - but after this waiting time the program run normal). So I decided to create a backup of the catalog and to remove some of the older photos from the "daily-usage" catalog. Unfortunately this didn't work properly and I could rescue the system only by creating a new, empty catalog. The files from the old one are still existing, but need to be opened by the organizer. I tried this on different ways, but according to the task manager the notebook loads only the first ~ 50 Mb to the memory and than starts to load the rest realy slow. In the end it woul need at least 30 days to load the entire catalog and I could not even be sure that than everything would be normal again.

Thus I have a few questions:

1) Is there any way to load the catalog more quick? or

2) Are there any tool available to split such a catalog file without the need to load it prior? and

3) Which would be the latest version beeing able to open a v3.0 catalog (and if this also is a rather "antique" version, which versions would be needed to get the catalog to an accaptable recent version, could this conversions be done with demo versions of PSE). For this qustion it might be important to know, that she preferes the hierachical categories (unfortunately only saved in the catalog, not with the picture file itself) over the tags.

I'm going to see her next weekend again, so I would be really greatfull if anyone could help me suring this week and I could try to fix it on the weekend.

Best,

Juergen
