Problem with Painterly (Elements 15)

New Here ,

I am having a really frustrating time with Elements 15 - I love it when I can make it work !

I am in guided / fun edits / painterly.

I select the paint brush / the picture goes opaque /  I select either the hide or show button (doesn't matter which)/ hover over the picture but the area selected doesn't change.

I have no idea what I am doing wrong - or if I have inadvertently turned something on or off, but that's as far as I can get.

I have done it in the past without any problems - can anyone help me please?

I appreciate you getting back to me, but it is the "automatically" bit that is not happening.  I can gather up the brush area, but when I hover over the picture, I can't "drop" it to automatically pain the main subject of the photo.

"Click the Paint Brush button to automatically paint the main subject of the photo with an artistic surface. A special set of brushes is available to paint the main subject of the image."

Try re-setting the prefs.

Launch Photo Editor and go to:

Edit >> Preferences >> General (Tab) on Windows

Adobe PS Elements Editor >> Preferences >> General (Tab) on Mac OS

Click the button to re-set preferences on next launch.
