I have noticed that Nikon Nef raw files converted to PSD files are about twice as large as those converted to TIF files. What is stored in the PSD files that's not stored in the TIF?

Perhaps when saving the TIF file your using No Compression? Try with using LZW compression.

PSD files are compressed by default so they will be considerably smaller that a TIF with no compression.

(both psd and tif lzw are lossless compression so no quality loss in the image should occur)

The exception to this is if your document is 16 bits/channel, then using LZW compression can actually increase the file size, but with 8 bits/channel documents LZW compression can make a big difference in file size.
