Is it possible to have a single picture appear twice in a single album at different positions?

Yes it can be done but you need to create a duplicate. Select your thumbnail and go to the Organizer menu and choose:
File >> Export As New Files
Save a copy to your pictures folder or wherever you prefer. Go to your folder after export and re-name the file. I usually add -2 to the original name. Then import into Organizer and drag it into your album. If you set the sort order to “Album Order” you can drag each image into a fixed position. See images below.

Thanks for your answer, 99jon. I understand that I might solve my problem by creating one or more duplicates. And I'm willing to believe that duplicates might be the only solution. The reason that I would like to circumvent duplicates and would like to have a single picture/single file is that duplicates may, in the future, diverge by editing at a later stage. If I edit one of the twins (and forget that I'm dealing with twins), they are no longer twins, if you know what I mean. They then are two different files.

I know what you mean but I don’t know of any other method. It is possible to have the same image in multiple albums but not multiple times in the same album.

If you stack the images, either by creating a version set when duplicating them (in the Editor, using Save As) or by manually creating a stack (if you use John's Export method), you will be better able to keep track of your "twins" when editing them later.
