Whatever happened here seems to have worked but how?
My PSE8 worked for the last 5 years.
The Organizer still worked but the Editor would crash every time on the load,
Out of desperation, I uninstalled PSE8.
I then reinstalled PSE8 from my CD. (Came with my Canon Photo Scanner).
I EXPECTED to have to ‘restore’ my saved photos.
I opened the Organizer expecting to find an empty screen (no photos).
However, ALL of my photos and project files were already there.
No restore necessary.
PSE8 on HP 32 bit Vista system.
Your photo catalog is merely a database that points to the images on your hard drive. When you uninstall the program, none of your photo files get deleted. When you re-install the program, the registry probably still points to your last used catalog so it opened the catalog automatically and hopefully everything is working as it should.
