"could not complete request because of program error"

New Here ,
Dec 30, 2016 Dec 30, 2016

Hi,

I recently installed a free trial of Photoshop Elements 15. When attempting to open a .psd file from my local hard drive I received this error message "could not complete request because of program error". Any idea what could be causing this error?

Thanks.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Please keep Ctrl+Alt+Shift (WIN) / Cmd+Shift+Option (MAC) keys pressed while launching Editor.
A dialog will pop up asking to Delete Photoshop Elements Settings file. Say Yes,

Now try opening .psd file and let us know if issue still persists.

Thanks,
Anwesha

Hi,

I followed the steps you suggested and kept ctrl+alt+shift pressed while editor was launching, however, no dialog box appeared. I attempted this several different times in slightly different ways but each time editor opened as it normally would. Is there another way to access settings to give this command?

Thanks.

No issues.

While Editor is launched, press Ctrl+K (WIN) / Cmd + K (MAC)

This will open Preferences dialog.
Click on Reset Preferences on next launch and re-launch Editor.

Let us know if it helps.

Thanks,

Anwesha

I was able to launch the preferences dialog and click on reset preferences. I closed the application and reopened it but am still receiving the same error when I attempt to open the .psd file.

Hi,

Are you getting this issue only for a particular .psd file or for all psd files. Please confirm.

Also mention the OS version you are using.

Regards,

Shivani

I only own 2 .psd files. I can't open either. I am using Windows 10. Thanks.

Is there a way we could get on a phone call? I feel like this could take weeks to troubleshoot if we continue trying to attempt resolve it through this thread? I'd really like to purchase photoshop but am reluctant until I can see that I'm able to work on these files the way that I'd hope to. Thanks.

Hi,

Please try downloading and then opening the .psd file shared at

NewPSD.psd - Google Drive

In case, you are still getting the error. We would setup a connect session to troubleshoot your issue.

Please let us know if you are still getting the error or not with the psd file shared.

Thanks,

Shivani

Hi,

I was able to download the shared .psd file and it opened successfully. Would it be possible to setup a connect session to troubleshoot why I am unable to open the .psd files on my computer? Thanks.

Hello,

I have exactly the same problem with the trial version of Photoshop Elements. I can open PSD documents without any problems but some display an error message when opening. I suspect that it is due to the fact that the files are too heavy (above 30mo and sometimes up to 90mo).

Can you provide me with a solution quickly? My company thinks of buying the software but if there are any problems, it's not worth it.

Thanks for yout help.
