I just started using PSE15, I don't have an earlier version on this computer. I loaded about 1,000 photos into Organizer from one folder on the computer's hard drive. When I double click on a thumbnail image the large photo comes up as a gray box with a question mark in it. Oddly, Organizer can "see" that there are people in the image even though it's not showing the image. I can open the file with Instant Fix, but I shouldn't have to do this to see a large version of the file. Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't understand exactly what you are seeing.
- After you import files, do their thumbnail appear for each one?
- If you see the thumbnail, double clicking is the same as moving the zoom slider to the right.
- If the thumbnail does not show, would 'Update thumbnail' from the right click contextual menu help?
- Maybe screenshots could help understand better what you are seeing?

Hi Michel.
1. Yes, the thumbnail appears
2. I didn't know you could use the slider to get the large view. But that's kind of a pain to have to do on each image — shouldn't the double click bring up the image in the 1x view?
3. There is a thumbnail.
4. I'll send a screenshot tomorrow. It will show a large, gray image with a question mark in the middle. I will also try to get a screen shot showing how it can still detect people even though the image doesn't appear.
Thanks for your help, now at least we have another way to see the large image.

Michel,
I tried using the slider to see an image big and I was able to use the slider on my computer but it DID NOT work on her computer with PSE15.
Here's a screen shot of a photo in the 1x view.
And here's an image showing how it can still see people in the photos even though it doesn't show the image.
I'm thinking maybe we should just uninstall then reinstall the application. What do you think?
Thanks.

Hi Karen,
Please try updating the thumbnail for the image/s you see "question mark" upon.
For this select the image, right click on it and select "Update Thumbnail" from the context menu.
In case it works fine for you, then you can select all such images and choose Update Thumbnail by right clicking on this selection.
Please try this and record your findings with us. If not resolved, then we will try out other solutions.
Thanks,
Arshla

Hi, I'm wondering A) were too many images uploaded at once and the site was 'overwhelmed'? B) if the images are corrupted at their origin (prior to being uploaded in PSE)? (Usually Pictures library, location) C) if the images were to be deleted from catalog and re-uploaded several at a time. One or two could be tried initially to check if this suggestion might work. Hi Arshla and Trishebear,
I have not found a fix yet. I've even uninstalled and reinstalled PSE 15 but when I open Organizer I get the same catalogue from the old version — it didn't start from scratch, I couldn't try uploading the photos again because PSE Organizer retained the old catalogue. When i try to manage catalogues the option for REMOVE is grayed out.
Originally I had put all the photos into one main folder, simply called PHOTOS with no subfolders. Then I added some other photos and did put then in subfolders, which Organizer saw with no problem. In preparation for re-uploading images into the newly installed PSE 15 I made about 10 subfolders and moved many photos into the various subfolders. Now Organizer isn't seeing those subfolders.
Last thing: I was able to tweek the ZOOM slider to be able to see the photos at 1x size but if I slide the slider all the way to the right I still get the large gray box with the question mark. I have to gingerly move the slider to the left in order to see the photos at the 1x size. A little too much and I get the 2x view, then 4x, etc.
So basically I've uninstalled the application, reinstalled it and still have the original problem. 😞

You can start the organizer with a new empty catalog by holding the shift key pressed when you launch the organizer.
You can never remove a catalog if it is active. You must switch to another existing catalog or create one. Then remove is active.

Michael, I'll ask again - are the images in your PC's photo files (Pictures Library in Windows) corrupted or not? That's where all images 'live'. You only create a trail or road from them to PSE or any other edit program you use. If they are corrupted there then you are not going to be able to import them into PSE in any other form than what they are. My advice to you is to create another catalog in your new version of PSE (15 right). You can have several 'catalogs' in organizer, but you need to know which one you are in - which if you look at the lower left corner it should tell you the name of the catalog you are in. I'm not in PSE right now, but in one of the menus (probably 'File') - top left there is an option for catalog management. When you click on that there are several things you can do to anyone of the catalogs in the PSE version you are in - or create another catalog. One of the options is to (can't think of the correct term) analyze or optimize the catalog. The box in the middle of the screen should list the catalogs in the version of PSE you are in. Make sure each one, if more than one, has a different name so you will know which one you are in. If I have confused you, please answer back and try to describe where you are confused. Hope I helped a little at least, Trish

Hi Michel,
I created a new catalogue, imported a folder with 8 photos that I know are not corrupt. The folder and photos were imported quickly and popped up as thumbnails in Organizer. But when i double-clicked on an image the large, 1x version is still a large gray box with a question mark in it. (I'm on a brand new iMac, btw.)
Then I tried OPTIMIZE and that didn't work. Then I tried RESTORE > RESTORE ANYWAY and that didn't resolve the issue either.
Can I get a new copy of PSE15 from Adobe?

Yes, you could download a new installation file from Adobe, but I don't think that could solve your problem. I rather think it's a problem specific to Macs or your display/display driver. I am on Windows only and I can't reproduce your issue...

Hi Karen,
Sincere apologies for the delayed response.
I would request you to please check and confirm the resolution of your monitor.

I have exactly the same problem as you since moving to PSE 15 on 5k retina iMac.
Catalog imports all photos, creates thumbnails but when I click on an individual thumbnail I also get grey screen with ?
Right clicking allows editing correctly so not corrupt catalog or missing files. Have uninstalled, re installed and created new catalogs - still happens.
This must be an issue with PSE15 +/- Sierra
No answers/fix as yet

Hi just checked - my version is 15.0 (20161208.m.100202 x64
I have checked update but tells me I have the latest version - clearly not 15.2

Yes that will be the latest version - December 2016.
Try selecting a few thumbnails and choose:
Edit >> Update Thumbnail for selected items.

Thanks - tried that both individually and with a few selected - still no joy.
Clearly, the "links" to the photos are all there as right clicking brings up the menu where I can (amongst other actions) open in Editor and that works just fine. It's just the double clicking on the thumbnail that's not working correctly.

Updating thumbnails DOES NOT FIX THIS! Don't know why folks keep suggesting this! the PROBLEM IS NOT WITH THE DAMN THUMBNAILS-it is a software bug!

I never had this with PSE 14 (also running under Sierra).
Guess going to have to hope it's fixed in a future update.
It's not a deal breaker but darned annoying

I've reversed charges on my Amex for this software. Suggest all mac users w issue do same. Adobe is ignoring this.

I’m running PSE15 on my Macbook Pro, OS Sierra without problem. Double-clicking a thumbnail launches the full screen view with the thumbnail slider fully pushed to the right and I can move back & forth in the full screen view using the right and left arrow keys. Sorry I can’t reproduce the problem you are seeing as whilst I have a retina display I don’t have the 5k monitor and that would seem to be the only difference.

I can only suggest reporting the issue in the feedback forum where the engineers will see it and can investigate.

I fixed it by going to system preferences, and unchecking Default for display. Once you toggle the resolution to "larger text", you can move between different resolutions and not lose the image again.
