No, you can't update the plugin, but...

The solution is to download the free Adobe DNGconverter mentioned in the above faq.
That independent program (not a plugin) can convert in a single batch process a whole folder of your NEF files to the DNG raw format that older Elements versions can read and edit. Same quality and free at the cost of a single batch step.
