Old versions of Photoshop Elements

My situation is rather unique. I had purchased an old version of Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 from a retailer. It was never used/installed/actiated. Yes, I am intellectually challenged. I would like to know if I would be able to upgrade to a newer version of Elements. I tried to install the software, but it caused my computer to err. Do you have directions/suggestions/whom I could contact for me? Thanks?

If you have the serial number of Photoshop Elements 12 (you will need it to install the upgrade), then go here:

https://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-elements.html

and click Buy now.

Then choose License upgrade from the Type dropdown (where it says Full license).
