Solid Drive Laptops

Just been to Currys, the main computer store here in the UK.  The laptop section is full of SSDs (Solid State Drives), and the laptops are about 3 times the cost, with very small memory storage.   They can also be made smaller.  I wonder if they are really much faster and more reliable and therefore worth the cost?

(My Organizer is faulty, very slow, keeps crashing, but I do not know if this is the fault of the Programme (PSE 14) or my laptop (which is new and supposed to be fast), so I will await the new Elements when it comes out.)

Generally SSD’s should make apps run faster. Usually 250GB or 500GB is sufficient unless you run lots of intensive apps/games.

I have a laptop with a 500GB SSD but I keep all photos and videos on an external drive. This ensures the SSD does not get swamped.

The other aspect is available memory (RAM). I have 8GB of RAM but when I upgrade I will probably get a minimum of 16GB of RAM which would give more scope for video editing as well as photos.

Thank you, useful.  I sometimes do weddings as a photographer, so want fast speed in Editor but also Organizer, which is the problem.

My second question is can I connect Organizer to an external hard drive?  If so how?  I have always had all of my photographs, now 103,000 (plus a few videos) on my laptop.

Yes. Simply place new photos in folders on an external drive and use the menu:

File >> Get Photos & Videos >> From Files & Folders

Select All and click “Open” or “Get Media”

For Photos already in Organizer, select images and use:

File >> Move

Then use the browse button to choose a location.
