Photoshop Elements doesn't store the photo files used in your slideshow.  The photos are wherever you saved them on your computer or external drive or disc.

You mean the 'catalog', which is where the organizer stores the information about your photo and video files :  the exif data from your camera, your own tags and captions, albums etc. It also stores links to the real location of each media file in your computer as well as small thumbnails.

In PSE4, it's a Microsoft Access database,  named (if I remember well) "catalog.psa".

Since version PSE6, t's not a single file, it's a whole folder with many components. You find its location from the menu Help >> System Information. By default, this location is a 'hidden' folder and you may have to tell your Explorer to show hidden files and folders. I no longer have PSE 4 installed, I suppose it's the same.

Finding the catalog won't probably help you to find the files used in your slideshow. If I remember well, you could choose several output formats for your slideshow and you had the choice to save the 'assets' used in that creation in a  'project' format, with a .pse extension. That's what might help you find what you are after.
