Tiff Images Cropped On Mac

Community Beginner ,
May 06, 2018 May 06, 2018

Good day.

I'm using the latest version of PhotoShop Elements on a Mac. When I import Tiff's that are created from scans on my Epson V550, the images are cropped.

If I change the Tiff to a JPEG (outside of Photoshop), the resulting imports import correctly with no crop.

Any suggestions to why this is occurring?

Kindest Regards!

Warning: The following ideas are just suppositions... and I would be interested to get more info from expert users.

What you are describing looks like the tiff format created by your scanner hardware includes a 'trimming' indicator. A quick look at the manual shows that it's an option when you save the file. Trimming seems to be a final 'cropping' indicator built into the tiff file. First thing to check: do you use that option when saving?

I understand that when you open the tiff format from Photoshop Elements, you only see the 'trimmed' or 'cropped' image. I would not be surprised if you get the same result by saving in jpeg format. (another thing to test).

My idea is that the scanner software uses the option to save a 'clipping path' to record the trimming area as well as the pixel data. It's a kind of vector rectangular frame, named 'alpha channel' in Adobe or other editing softwares. You can manage those 'channels' in the full Photoshop and I believe in Indesign. What is not widely known is that the jpeg format can include such a clipping path... but Elements has no built-in way to manage it (show/hide, remove...)

So, my guess is that other editing softwares you are using don't recognize the trimming channel, while Elements does take it into account.

I can add the ability to use a clipping path in Elements by using an affordable add-on (Elements+) but I am surprised the clipping path is automatically  used when opening the tiff file.

LATEST

What version of macOS are you using?

If the scan looks something like the one below in the cutoff area then It might be problem like discussed here:

tiff file displays correctly in Preview; gets cut off when opened in Bridge or Photoshop
