These are instructions for a class I am taking:

Press shift, control J to cut out selection and place on it's own layer.  When I do I get an error instant GIF off and it doesn't perform the task.

Also if I use shift control U to make pic black and white I get in-game replay message and doesn't turn pic black and white.

I am using PSE 2024 with windows 10.

Any ideas why this is happening?

After you have made a selection of an object using one of the selection tools, e.g. Magnetic Lasso tool, you should see "marching ants" outline surrounding the object. Press CTRR+J to place the object on its own layer.

Just found out others are having the same issue with PSE 2025 as well and are using the control J.  Must be a glitch in the program!  I'll just continue using the control J and disregard instructions.

Thanks everyone for your help!

That's what I have been doing.  Just trying to figure out why the instructions given don't work when nobody else seems to have an issue.  Maybe just one of those things that don't need to be figured out!

What file format is your document/image?

If you to Image>Mode is does it show a check next to RGB Color and 8Bits/Channel greyed out?

Next to the Layer thumbnail in the Layers panel does it say Indexed?

Can you post a screenshot showing the document along with the Layers panel?

Such behavior in the program usually is not a "bug" or a glitch - it typically is user caused (Which many users fail to believe) - a configuration, a tool, a plug in unique to you how your comptuer is set up--- and sometimes the users isn't even talking about the correct program-- For example:  They are talking about Photoshop, and not Photoshop Elements.

Sometimes resetting your tools clears things up.

Ok just checked everything you suggested.  I am definitely in PSE, no plug-ins and reset the tools. I'm still having the same problem.  I'll admit I know just enough to be dangerous!  Guess I'm just going to hang this problem up and just use control J.  Just hate it when things don't work the way they should but...

Thanks for your suggestions and help.  Happy New Year!

If you go to Layer>New>Layer via Cut or Layer>New>Layer via Copy does that work?

Can you post a screenshot similar to Glenn's showing the image and layers panel?

I think I've got the screen shot attached.  I am separating the letter each on to own layer.  Yes, when I went to  Layer/new layer via cut it worked.
