I have a brand-new iMac, everything running fast and smooth EXCEPT PhotoShop Elements 2019. Hangs, cuts out, takes FOREVER to get anything done. What's up?

When you first install 2019, it goes through a thorough analysis of your media in order to generate the new auto-creations as well as create automatic tags. If you are creating a new catalog or adding photos to your catalog, it is also analyzing your photos for face recognition.
This auto-analysis is highly resource intensive and can bog down your computer (although, in theory, the analysis should only be taking place in the background when you are doing nothing else). Depending on the size of your catalog, the analysis can take several days of non-stop work.
It is possible to turn the auto-analysis off in Preferences.

Greg,
I turned off the "Graphics Processor for Adjusting Facial Features." I
have only had a chance to do one short project, but there was no hanging or
spinning ball of death.
I have more than 30,000 in my Photos. Is this what PE is accessing? I do
not use PE Organizer.

When you say that you don't use the Organizer, does that mean that you currently have an empty catalog? If that is the case, then there will be no auto-analysis going on.
Turning off the graphics processor should have no effect on the hangs you have been experiencing. In fact, the opposite. The use of the graphics processor should speed up any editing using the Adjust Faces tool.
I am a Windows person, so I may be totally wrong about how your Mac may be affected.

I am not using the Organizer in PSE2019, only the Editor but the program is excruciatingly slow. I'm needing it for a class otherwise I wouldn't even keep trying to use it. Suggestions for helping it to run faster? Is there a fix for it?

I am having the exact same issue...new iMac, purchased adobe elements to edit videos and it takes over 3 hours to render a 45 minute video. I am not doing anything fancy with it whatsoever. It is literally me teaching a classes by myself with picture in picture. Let me know if you find answers. Infuriating...got it to upgrade; was more expensive than most in this bracket, has crappy stock (unless of course I want to purchase more), and takes 10x the amount of time as iMovie.

You've posted in the Photoshop Elements forum but your post suggests you're using Premiere Elements.
Is that the case?

I do have the same problem.
Photoshop and Affinity Photo, incl. Plugins, run without any problems.
Adobe does not take care about this problem.
