You can't update the metadata in the catalog from the photo files after the import.

The only way would be to delete the files from the catalog and import them again.

Only exception I know of: the captions.

If you use the 'update thumbnail' command after a right click, the captions are updated from the files into the catalog.

You would need Lightroom to enable updating both ways.

Many thanks for the answer. I found the solution to the problem. The suggested deletion of photos from the catalog destroys version set, stacking, and rating information. If the photos you want to update move outside the Organizer to another folder, the thumbnails in the Organizer will be marked as missing files. When reconnecting the thumbnails to the moved files, all meta-data will be read in as it was imported. The information about version sets. Stacking and ratings remain in the catalog. Within the Organizer, the photos can now be moved to their original location.

Very interesting,  many thanks!

Yes, this process will keep albums, stacks and version sets.

What I'll have to test is the difference with the 'update thumbnail' solution.

Many items in metadata can be updated in the catalog from the file header in the reconnection process.

- captions

- tags (is there addition, deletion, consolidation?  )

- Date taken

- resolution

- geotagging?

-  face recognition?

- ...

I'll need some time to test and compare.

Edit:

After testing and comparing both solutions ('update thumbnails' versus 'disconnect, reconnect') I am not optimistic.

Both solutions can recover captions and date_taken from the metadata header.

They can't recover new keywords from the metadata.

It does not seem geotagging is recovered, I don't use the feature and I'll leave geotagging experts try and comment.

I don't use face recognition, so I can't comment.
