Although I have Elements 2020, I still use Elements 2 because I'm more familiar with it, and the program (while outdated) is far easier to use for some functions.
I was recently compelled to re-install Windows 10 due to update errors. The re-install went fine, as did all updates. I loaded up all my software, including the old Elements 2.
I run the program in compatability mode for Windows XP (sp3), which seems to work fine; it did before my mishap. However, now the automatic Color Variations control button is dimmed out and can't be clicked. I've tried other compatabilities, but nothing seems to work.
Anyone have an idea how to rectify this?

Is your image in RGB Color?
(Image>Mode)
In photoshop elements 2 does it work if you go to Enhance>Adjust Color>Color Variations?

Hi. . . . Thanks for this solution.
Unfortunately, the function you note does not appear under the specified tool group. The first four are there; color cast is not. Verrrrry strange, eh?

If you go to
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 2\Plug-Ins\Filters
do you see the
VariationsEL.8BF

Filters folder doesn't exist. I'm going to uninstall and re-load, see what happens.

I've reloaded the program. The Variations file is now present in the appropriate folder and the variations control button has reappeared.
However, Enhance>Adjust Color>Color Variations is still missing. Really weird.
I suppose now that I have the desired functionality, I should stop complaining about a bug in a very old program

It's not a bug. It's a compatibility issue.

Which Windows version would you recommend? Right now the program's using compatability for XP (sp3). I've tried Win95 and earlier XP versions; all end with the same result.

Does Variations work if you click on the Icon?

Yes it does! I'm just not able to access the color adjustment bars from the drop-down menu.

I would reset the pse 2 preferences by going to
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Photoshop\Elements
and deleting the
Photoshop Elements 2.0 Prefs folder.
