Clone tool [PSE 12: area to clone has not been defined]

When I try to use the clone tool using photoshop elements 12 I click on an area I want the clone to use but get a message could not use the clone tool as the area to clone has not been defined, this message appears if I click on the area no matter were I select ie the area to clone or the area to use.The clone tool works if I try the pattern picker.Can any one help.

Ray,

Hold down the ALT key on the keyboard while you left click on the source area. That should fetch it.

Further to above, on the Clone tool's option bar, be sure that "Sample all layers" is checked.
