Can someone direct me to instructions to convert a small jpeg (136 x 90) to a PNG? I've tried videos and searches and find too many different answers and none worked. Have PhotoShop Elements 14. Thanks!
Open your jpg image in expert mode. Go to the File menu and select Save As... Choose PNG from the Save as type pop down (tick any of the boxes that may be important to you). Set the desired destination, then click the Save button.
Creating transparency in a background is different from just converting to a png. A png file will only have the transparency that you give it.
The way that you've done what you wanted to do is a pefectly good way to do it.
PNG is a file format which supports transparency.
If you have a logo with a background, it is necessary to delete the background. To do that, do the following:
Open the logo file
Double click on the Background layer in the layers palette to convert the locked background layer to a regular layer
Activate the magic wand tool. The default tolerance setting is 32. Try this value and uncheck "Contiguous." Left click on an area (background) that you want to get rid of, and hit delete on the keyboard
...The simplest method is to select the subject of the logo (quick selection tool would work well) and then press Ctrl+J to create a new transparent layer with the selection only. Delete the background layer. Then go to File >> save for Web. Choose PNG24 to save the transparency.
Note that if the logo has background associated with it, esp. in relation to artwork or within letters of the alphabet, a gross selection will not do the trick. It is critical to remove these targets in order to achieve transparency. For example, for the COCA COLA logo , one would want to remove the white areas in order to have just the script.
We look forward to your progress.

Hello Nathan, not sure why Save As ... would not work, you might want to question why an integrated feature of your software application is not working. Most graphics applications can save or export in many different formats including PNG.
If you are still unsuccessful, there are several free applications for personal use that perform such conversions on both single and on multiple files in batch mode. For example, we use XnViewMP for such conversions located at http://www.xnview.com. We have been pleased with this product, but there are also many other similar products.
Hope this helps.

Hi. That procedure doesn't convert the image to a transparent background. However, I did find a way to do it after some practice. If it's a logo you have to highlight the image with the magic wand for what you want in the foreground. Then "invert" the selection. Go to image mask and click (I think), hide all. I forget without going in and looking but it's a few steps. If there is an easier way please advise but this I've wanted to do for years. Thanks for your responses.

Go to another area until the logo is all cleaned up. If the magic wand fetches too much, reduce the tolearnce to 10-15.
