Elements 12 Raw Conversion problem

For years I would open a file in Raw and then edit it and then open it to finish editing it in Elements and it would automatically come up as a jpeg. Not that long ago it started to come up as a .psd file and you would then have to change it every time to a change it to a jpeg to save it. Did something change? Is there a way to get this back? It's really annoying that it worked properly and now it doesn't.

The cause could be not having the Depth is set to 8 bits/Channel in the camera raw dialog.
