Elements 15 Error: "An integer between 50 and 8 is required. Closest value inserted."

I am trying to manage Performance in the Edit/Preferences, but all I get is a small rectangular error code box stating: "An integer between 50 and 8 is required. Closest value inserted." After this box has appeared, the whole program freezes - I cannot even close it. I have to go into Task Manager to shut the program.

I am using Windows 10 Pro 64 bit with the latest updates installed. Can anyone offer me any advice as to how to deal with this issue? I have uninstalled and re-installed Elements 15 twice already, but this made no difference.

This error message has already been mentioned after the latest Windows update.

Did you notice other issues after the update?

Thank you, MichelBParis, for your reply.

Now that you come to mention it, I have recently noticed a significant slowing-down of my system, but I have not been able to attribute it to any specific cause. However, after following different threads in various User Forums after the latest Windows update, I am inclined to the opinion that it was that update which caused my machine's recent loss of performance.

As to my original posting, I did find a solution on this forum, but it involves some slight editing of the Windows Registry. Thread 2416657 carries a response by JDH_2017 on the 4th January 2018:-

"Meanwhile I found a workaround for my problem. Under \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\16. 0 I created a DWORD OverridePhysicalMemoryMB (my System has about 4 GB of free space with total 8 GB RAM)  with the value of 4000. Now I can open 'preferences --> performance' and change values. Anything works well again.

Obviously, PSE gets not the correct value for the available memory on my system, but I did not found the reason. That shouldn't be a problem for Adobe, their developers know how and where they grab the value. Let's see whether ADOBE contact, I have opend a telephone support request two days ago."

I followed these instructions, and so far as my system is concerned, the issue has now been solved. So, a big "Thank You" to JDH_2017!!

All that remains now is to find out why this memory problem occurred in the first place...

With Many Thanks again for your interest, Michel.

I had the same error with Elements 14. The effect was I was unable to save ANY photo files in the Editor, and trying to change the Ram preferences just gave this error - this rendered the entire Adobe software useless. It seemed to start fairly recently, perhaps after the recent April Creators Update.

Anyway I applied the registry fix, and then was immediately able to change the Ram preferences. Instant success, the system is now back in action - it starts much faster too.

This problem seems so serious to me I am really surprised that a company like Adobe can let it go on for so long without a fix. I was seriously about to abandon Adobe for an alternative!!

So long? For Elements, the problem appeared with the last Windows update (last week for me). The registry fix is known since a similar issue appeared in Photoshop CC three months ago.

You don't know how the problem will be solved and by whom: Microsoft, Adobe or both? Imagine Adobe provides another workaround and Microsoft changes its routines at the same time: will that work?

Anyway, according to the license, Adobe only supports the latest Elements version. The registry fix seems to work for all versions. And as far I know, the issue only appears with configs with  lot of RAM (> 16 GB); most Elements users have only 4 or 8 GB like me.

Yes, I only have4 Gb - was looking into doubling it, but my ram dimms are difficult to get now as the system is 8 years old, and although working well, it will soon need replacing. Was also considering upgrading to Elements 18 - but have shelved that idea temporarily - I'm in "wait and see" mode!

I'm sorry, but since I am an fine artist and not a technically savvy graphic artist, I fail understand any of this jargon (registry, integer, et al). Is there anyone out there who can walk me through a simple step by step process... 1., 2., 3.,?  I have spent twenty hurs on this problem and still no fix for it. I have Photoshop Elements 14, Microsoft 10, 64 bit (this much I know). Desperate.

Hey! I got it fixed but for an amateur like me it would impossible to figure out any instruction given by anyone. I think most non-techies will softwear in the trash, uninstall and go buy your competitors product rather than pay for and wait on line for one of Adobe’s support team.

Anthony,

If you browse this forum in search of the hundreds of posts about this Microsoft plague, you'll see that most amateurs without any computer knowledge have succeeded to follow the step by step instructions which don't require understanding the technical vocabulary. You don't even have to know what 'registry' does mean.

Yes, some users will do as you suggest. Others will switch to Apple, not knowing that they have to update their operating system regularly for lack of 'backward compatibility' (do a Google search about that )

I am sorry for those users, but even if you use computers for creative purposes like most Elements users, you have to be aware of the requirements of your tool. It's just natural that they need some help which is provided in this and other forums. Be positive, with the help of fellow users, you can do it! Changing sotware, hardware versions or hardware is probably not the easiest way.

Hi, Michael B Paris,

Thanks for the scolding but as a former six figure marketing specialist let

me explain something about good business practice. When you refer someone

to your Community Forum realize that it is filled with chatty opinion. I

tried several of those and found myself bogged down in a mire of confusion.

I got nowhere very slowly. If I was Adobe, I would put simple authoritative

steps to success in a big box that screams "Adobe Solution for Photoshop

Elements 14 Not Enough RAM Stalemate" or some such thing. This would clear

up the trial and error guesswork we are subjected to.

You are wrong. I promise, countless people like me are still out there

struggling to fix this stupid integer issue. Fortunately, as it was, I have

a friend who is a high-level Microsoft software specialist who remotely

walked me through making the changes. Later he said most people, without

experience, would have found this troublesome if not impossible to do.

*Okay, now I want to hear it from people who agree with me and disagree

with the haughtiness of your response to me.*

Scolding?

Absolutely not.

Simple friendly advice.

I am sincerely happy that you could solve the issue with expert help.

Don't forget,  answers to a question in a forum have to take into account the many users with the same issue. What is important is to get the right message so that most of them can have the opportunity to choose if they follow or not the suggestions. Sorry if you misunterpreted my post.

Let me stress that you need to follow my suggestion and take the lead in helping your customers or would you prefer they invest twenty hours in oblivious conjecture and jargon? Or maybe, feeling a sense of frustration, they buy your support and hang on the phone for an hour. It’s easier to throw it in the trash and start over. My time is as important as yours.

I am having the same issues running on Elements 15.  Will this work around work for this version?  I am also not sure how to code my RAM my system has 4.0GB.  the workaround gives examples for 8GB i.e. 8196, would I just enter 4000?  I have very little experience in changing registry items and am hesitant in messing with them.  This issue is definately what I am dealing with.  Any additional information on this topic would be helpful.  Thank you in advance.
