  1. Open the file
  2. Double click the background layer to convert it to a regular layer
  3. Set up the Magic wand tool with tolerance=32 on the tool's option bar, and untick "Contiguous"
  4. Left click on a white area, then hit delete on the keyboard

Now, you will have the  logo without background. The checkerboard pattern denoted transparency. What is your ultimate goal?

The original poster was working with a jpeg file which does not have any layers. Forget step #2 - it won't do anything. Just do steps 1, 3, & 4, then save as a PNG file.

Followup to hatstead's reply:

You must save the result in a file type that supports transparency. PSD, GIF, PNG, TIFF, EPS support transparency.   JPG, BMP do not; If you were to save it as JPG or BMP you would end up with white background again.

FYI, you might consider installing the free add-on KillWhite that does just that: removes white in a picture. This can work well for complex pictures where it might be difficult to select the white using the PSE tools. It is installed in the PSE filters folder.
As with the built-in PSE filters, you can apply it to just a selected area of the picture.

Since the white is replaced with transparency, you would have to apply the filter either to a duplicate of the Background layer or else a renamed Background layer.

KillWhite | Mike's Extra

For demonstration purposes, here I ran KillWhite and put the result over a color background.
