In what way would it be a killer on your eyes?  I was a PS user too and think PSE is amazing.

Hello,

There is no provision to customize the UI color theme in Photoshop Elements 2020. The only part of the UI that can be changed is the canvas area. Right-click anywhere on it to bring up the color choice dialog. Please refer to https://community.adobe.com/t5/Photoshop-Elements/How-to-change-the-Worspace-Background-color/m-p/10...

Thanks

Just bought the Elements package, 2020 edition, and was surprised to see there was no dark theme support in the Organizer, my previous version (11) had this which I liked a lot. Is there any way to fix this with some tweak?

You can change Photoshop 2021 to dark or lighter mode by using: SHIFT + F1

@Abbey5E54, this is the Photoshop Elements forum, not the Photoshop forum.  (And in Photoshop 2021, you need to use Shift+F1 and Shift+F2 to cycle backwards and forwards through the different modes.)

I am profoundly disappointed that Adobe does not offer the dark mode on the 2021 version of Photoshop Elements. My impression is that Adobe omitted this feature deliberately to annoy its customers and to entice them to upgrade to PS.

Shame on you Adobe for not having the fortitude to offer an over priced PS Elements without even the basic UI modes that one can even get with free software of similar standard.

It is sad, a company, that once had an excellent report with its customers is now playing strategic and discriminating games with its various versions of software – that is, the customers who buy PS Elements shall be punished for not having purchased PS of the CC cloud.

Best regards,

Ernst Zimmer (a long term customer of Adobe).

@firnges

A long term user of an old PSE version before  PSE11 can't boast to be a "long term customer".

A very, very small number of old PSE users prefer the old dark Organizer interface. It's not a problem with the editor where you can change the background color. By the way, choosing black image window backgroung may enhance the colors of the image by contrast, but that may be misleading.

Back to the organizer with its revamped PSE11 interface.

I would NEVER go back to the old UI. The dark interface is a serious issue for my old eyes (I would not say a 'killer', but a remnant of the over contrasty UI of the old days; the kind UI and ergonomy specialists are no longer supporting).

More important, the new interface has decisive advantages for organizing.

- aptitude to differentiate the status of thumbnails by subtle grey variations which let you distinguish immediately the selected ones, the stacked/versioned ones and so on. No aggressive differences.

- better adaptation to the new modes of editing: not only in a controlled environment but also on laptops in any kind of lighting.

It's legitimate that you ask what you prefer, ok. The problem is that it's not a question of  'omitting' an alternative in interface, it's that the alternative does not and can't exist for the current interface choices. It's not a simple matter of changing 'skins' or backgrounds. Creating an alternative based on your tastes would be creating a whole new software: a big and costly change for how many potential buyers?

My suggestion for you now is to take advantage of what Adobe makes available for you for free: use Bridge as your organizing software instead of the organizer. No need for a subscription.

Come on man, this light theme is killing my eyes.

Just because it works for YOU doesn't mean it works for everyone else. At the very least, there should be an option to have both. No option at all doesn't do anyone any favors.

Ok, I understand that you prefer a dark interface like the one in PSE10. You justify this totally valid preference by your 'eye strain'. I am happier with the new interface of the organizer since PSE11, but that's not critical for me, provided I am working in ergonomic conditions for editing and organizing. That means, ideally working in optimized lighting condition, on a large desktop display at reasonable distance. That's critical for those who have to print regularly or perform detailed retouching. For organizing, there is a difference: I often use a laptop when moving or travelling and I have to adapt to many kinds of ambient lighting. Not long viewing/editing sessions on a small, near display. Different ergonomic constraints.

Now, I am not an ergonomy nor eyesight specialist, but I am happy to still have a correct vision at 76 after a life before many kinds of displays. Today's smartphones and tablet intensive users have different needs and their preferences have led them to forget desktops and switch to laptops. I do believe that ten years ago, when Adobe decided to 'revamp' the UI, especially for the organizer, they optimized to two new factors:

- ergonomy for non sedentary editing/management

- adaptation to small screens and new trending 'lighter' modes for other uses. By the way, the last (hardly visible) change in organizer 2022 is a still 'lighter' interface which does not help visibility.

While having the choice of light or dark 'skins' seems an excellent idea, I am pretty sure that won't happen. The current design gives a huge importance to the degrees of grey showing workspace, panels, stacks or  selections. I don't see a way to translate that to dark mode. That would need a different interface altogether. And the current state of the already old PSE interface, editor and organizer, is that it is highly criticized for its lack of flexibility and text scaling. There is no sign for a revolution to happen soon in that direction.

Yeah. Even Adobe Photoshop Elements 2022 appears to not have a dark theme AT ALL. I tried googling, and everyone says it doesn't have a dark theme.

A dark theme is a basic accessibility feature in modern apps. to allow people to not get eyestrain while working. All modern programs worth their salt have an optional dark theme built in. Online some say Elements USED to have a dark theme.

What this implies to me is the dark theme was taken OUT of the program, and this feels like an intentional insult by Adobe toward us "poor" customers to get us to pay much more for the Creative Cloud version. When your app is good, you don't have to hide basic accessibility features behind a paywall. And photoshop IS good... so why do this?

This is technically my fault - I didn't thoroughly research Photoshop Elements 2022 before purchasing, to ensure it had a dark theme. I also didn't research to ensure it can display fonts, that it contains a paint brush option, and that it has mouse support. Because I shouldn't have to double check that ANY app in 2022 has these basic features, let alone a paid professional image editing app. I was so excited to try Photoshop, but I just can't function productively without a dark mode.

You can change the brightness of the canvas area, which doesn't matter since the screen is still surrounding by glowing white bars - which have reportedly been made BRIGHTER recently to "make it easier for users to see." But I think this was done to make the "cheap users" even MORE uncomfortable. The Unity game engine made the same decision, only to smartly do a 180 and now offer both light and dark modes FREE in the FREE version of Unity. Since there's no reason to 1) not have this feature 2) take it out, or 3) make it worse, 4) when this feature could be added in an afternoon.

The only other possibility is that this was done intentionally by Adobe to make poor people's lives miserable for committing the crime against Adobe of being too poor to afford the Creative Cloud. When every other credible app in 2022 has long since implemented optional light and dark themes, this app looks straight out of 1995, and the excuse that Adobe "just didn't realize this was a desired or useful feature" does not fly. Blender is FREE, and you can customize every single color in that program. Adobe can afford to add a feature Blender can add for free. Again, a dark mode is a basic accessibility and productivity feature in modern apps. There are often work-arounds for these kinds of things unless the app makers intentionally lock the code away to prevent Windows themes from being able to be applied.

It's unfortunate I can't even begin evaluating this program to see if it could replace my previous paint/photo program, because I can't even see for a few minutes without eyestrain. This has made this $70 purchase, which Best Buy fulfilled in a timely fashion, a giant waste of my money, and I won't be trying any more Adobe products. I'll have to try other options like Gimp, Krita, Clip Studio Paint Pro, or keep using the terribly-performing Paint Shop Pro X9, unless I can find better suggestions. it's unfortunate because I was excited to finally actually learn official Photoshop, but it seems I'll need to become much richer to afford a version that's not going to hurt my eyes.

Just because it's popular, doesn't make is good.

  • Dark mode can reduce eye strain in low-light conditions.
  • 100% contrast (white on a black background) can be harder to read and cause more eye strain.
  • It can be harder to read long chunks of text with a light-on-dark theme.

It (dark mode) can also affect how you see colors.   It makes your eyeballs work harder

It also depends upon what you choose to reference as finding ways to say "dark mode is better".
By the way, it's not a bug.

I just downloaded & installed Elements 2022 & I could not believe I was seeing a workspace background that wasn't 18% Grey like it has been in previous versions & no option to set that very light grey color darker. adobe has ignored the traditional standard that has been in Photography forever. I agree that this is adobe punishing those of us that refuse to pay a subscription fee forever which I will never do. I will have to put up with it becasue I need it for my restoration work & art but it is wrong for adobe to do this to this Senior Citizen who has been a Photographer for 55 Years & others like me.
